Internet Explorer story was bogus

A story which suggested that users of Internet Explorer have a lower IQ than people who chose other browsers appears to have been an elaborate hoax.

A number of media organisations, including the BBC, reported on the research, put out by Canadian firm ApTiquant.

It later emerged that the company’s website was only recently set up and staff images were copied from a legitimate business in Paris.

It is unclear who was behind the stunt.

The story was reported by many high profile organisations including CNN, the Daily Mail, the Telegraph and Forbes.

Questions about the authenticity of the story were raised by readers of the BBC website who established that the company which put out the research – ApTiquant – appeared to have only set up its website in the past month.

Thumbnail images of the firm’s staff on the website also matched those on the site of French research company Central Test, although many of the names had been changed.

The BBC contacted Central Test who confirmed that they had been made aware of the copy but had no knowledge of ApTiquant or its activities

Well i wonder who got the authorisation to post the news item even if it was so obviously false.

The Bribery Act 2011

I found this interesting, the new Bribery Act came into force today.

The Act creates several new criminal offences, including giving or receiving a bribe; promising, offering, requesting or agreeing to receive a bribe; and bribing a foreign public official. The new law extends to the public and private sectors and covers both commercial activities and public life. The penalty for conviction is up to ten years’ imprisonment.

An organisation can also commit an offence of failure to prevent bribery by those associated with it. In common with many substantial public and private sector employers, the University has therefore adopted an anti-bribery statement as one of the measures it will take to respond to its new duties under the Act.

Masters Finito

So ive come to the end of my Masters In Information Systems, admitly i have taken the easy option ive decided to take the Postgraduate Diploma. I was struggling with working full time, playing the sport i love which been hockey takes up one day a weekend, also generally i had lost the motivation to finish and get the dissertation done. So much to do for a masters dissertation, its 16000 words to right.

But it was the best decsion for me, and that is what matters, i started a masters to get a good job. I have a good job without a masters, i enjoy my job even with the stress that happens once a year before a new term. Also making the decsion has taken a huge amout of stress away. Also recently i had an email from the head of the course to say that next year the masters is being dropped in light of the Universities job cuts and the computer science department is being reorganised. So even if i had wanted to do my dissertation i would have had one hell of  a tight schedule to get it done.

All in all, the decision was my decision and it was the best one for me.
